Shichahai is the only place in the city where “Imperial Grandeur” meets “Aquatic Serenity.” Historically the terminal of the Grand Canal, this area became the preferred residence for Qing Dynasty princes and high officials. As you wander past the sprawling Prince Kung’s Mansion, you feel the weight of history. By day, the lakes offer a peaceful retreat for elderly locals practicing Tai Chi; by night, the Houhai area transforms into a neon-lit waterfront of live music and bars.
