Qiandeng Ancient Town

Qiandeng is a town of “Firsts.” It is the hometown of Gu Yanwu, the great Ming-Qing philosopher, and more importantly, it is recognized as one of the birthplaces of Kunqu Opera, the “Ancestor of all Chinese Operas.” Walking down its 2-kilometer-long Stone-paved Street (Flagstone Road)—the best-preserved of its kind in East China—you can hear the distant echoes of operatic melodies. From the soaring Qinfeng Pagoda to the intimate courtyards of ancestral residences, Qiandeng offers a deep dive into the intellectual and artistic legacies that shaped the Jiangnan elite.

The birthplace of Kunqu Opera and the scholar Gu Yanwu—a town of 2,500 years where slate-paved lanes lead to the soul of Chinese classical art.
