Jokhang Temple

Founded in the 7th century, the Jokhang Temple is the spiritual heart of Lhasa. Its golden roofs reflect the Himalayan sun, while its corridors echo with the rhythmic chants of monks. The temple’s most revered treasure is the life-sized statue of the 12-year-old Buddha, brought to Lhasa by Princess Wencheng. Surrounding the temple is the Barkhor Street, where you can join pilgrims from across the plateau as they perform their ritual “kora” (circumambulation), a moving display of faith that has remained unchanged for over a millennium.

The holiest temple in Tibet, housing the sacred Jowo Shakyamuni statue—the ultimate destination for thousands of pilgrims.
