Suzhou Museum

The Suzhou Museum is a breathtaking bridge between China’s imperial past and its creative future. Located adjacent to the Humble Administrator’s Garden, it was the “final grand work” of Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei in his ancestral hometown.

The building reinterprets traditional white-walled and grey-tiled Jiangnan architecture through bold, modern geometries and glass roofs that flood the galleries with natural light. Beyond its world-class collection of Wu-school paintings, exquisite jades, and delicate ceramics, the museum’s central courtyard—featuring a creative “stone-slice” rockery against a whitewashed wall—is a contemporary Zen masterpiece.
