Junggar Basin

The Junggar Basin is the rugged heart of Northern Xinjiang. Bordered by the Altai Mountains to the north and the Tianshan to the south, this ancient depression is a theater of geological time. It is a land of extremes, where the Gurbantunggut Desert (China’s second-largest) meets rare inland lakes and prehistoric fossil beds. For the WeTrip traveler, the basin offers a sense of “cosmic loneliness”—a place of infinite horizons where the sky feels larger than the earth.
